It can be important to gain an understanding of your own family of origin experience. With this understanding you are in a better place to examine how you experience your world, as well as to be mindful in forming new relationships. People tend to repeat patterns in their relationships, even when their intention is to be “different” from their parents, or their prior intimate relationships. Understanding and self-awareness are the keys to creating new healthy and satisfying experiences with ourselves and with others. This kind of psychological work can be done individually, or with other family members.

When families attend together, the focus can be on the relationships in the present, with a focus on improvement. It can be deeply gratifying for family members to feel heard, understood, and to develop healthier ways of interacting.
